Amanda Vanstone: Anthony Albanese must be careful Voice process doesn't stoke division

Former senator and minister warns against divisive rhetoric

Albanese must ensure Voice debate is respectful

Former senator for South Australia and Howard government minister Amanda Vanstone has warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese against allowing the Voice to Parliament referendum debate to become divisive.

Vanstone, who is a member of the Referendum Working Group, said it is important that the debate is conducted in a respectful and constructive manner.

"We need to have a debate that is based on facts and evidence, not on fear and division," she said.

Vanstone's comments come as the government prepares to release its proposed referendum question and draft legislation.

The government has said it wants to hold the referendum in the second half of 2023.
